Let's All Be Brave By Annie Downs.

I loved the encouragement in this book, it reads very much like a big sister trying to encourage you to live your life the way the Lord wants you to. Encouragement to not stay with comfort when He is calling you to leap out of faith, her stories are full of scripture and truth guiding her decisions.

There are many stories of her own showing her own personal journey from wanting to stay where she was comfortable and felt safe, moving towards ministry she felt called to. It was a great light read and I finished it very quickly. It really did feel like a coffee date with a friend, mentor or big sister.

It left me feeling encouraged and gave me just what I needed to move forward with some scary decisions in life that I have been holding back on. Its great when the Lord's timing for reading a book is perfect isn't it?

I would recommend it for a weekend read that will leave you feeling uplifted and encouraged. Urging you to really figure out what the Lord is calling you specifically to do in the here and now to further His kingdom and how you are a part of a much larger complete picture.

What great books have you been reading lately friends?

Disclaimer: I did receive a copy of this book in exchange for review, however all views expressed are entirely my own thoughts and opinions

Write your Story on my Heart.

{Thank you sweet Katie for taking this picture!}

You know its not just coincidence when you hear the same message/topic multiple times in many different places. So the theme the Lord has been speaking to me lately has all been on sharing our stories. You know our testimonies, stories of ways He has worked in our lives. How He has walked each of us through so many different struggles, experiences and seasons. Yet we all have these incredible testimonies of how He has been or is at work in our lives.
When we let it, that can be such a gift to share with others. Used for encouragement, sympathy and leaving people with the knowledge that we don't struggle alone whatever we are facing. Each of us battles different things, but there are others who have walked similar paths.

It is so encouraging when we encounter those who are further ahead than we are in a particular season or struggle in life. While at Hope Spoken last weekend, I had the blessing of meeting such a sweet woman. I hadn't given a ton of thought as to which sessions I would listen to when we had our breakout sessions and got to listen in to several willing ladies share their stories of how the Lord has worked some crazy things into their lives. And loved how the Lord's hand was so evident in each of their stories.

When I sat through Danielle's session, I was captured by her words as she let her story unfold for us. Then came the ugly cry in the middle of a hotel ballroom. Just the reminder that grace is there for each of us no matter what we face. That redemption comes when we are willing participants in the plans He has for us. That some seasons may feel excruciatingly painful, but they have a divine purpose as He allows them to happen. Nothing is wasted with Him. No experience is just unnecessary trauma, but rather it is often woven into our life for a purpose we may never know or simply to conform us more into His image.
And if sweet Danielle had not been brave and stepped up allowing the Lord to use her story to touch the hearts of those women in that room, I may never have seen that truth shine brightly into my own life circumstances.

I loved this reminder last weekend, that this is why we each have stories. Several times in the past I have been told that I share too many stories with people. Yet I've always come away confused as to why you wouldn't want to hear that whoever you are talking to gets what you are saying, because they have walked something similar. I love hearing stories from others, I have so instantly felt like kindred spirits with a beautiful woman after hearing her encouragement in the form of her story. Its such a way into the depths of a person, hearing how the Lord has walked them through struggles and hearing how He has redeemed terrible situations. It gives such hope and encouragement in my own life. And it is such a blessing to be allowed into a person's life through them sharing those deep things.

I really hope to be a good steward of the experiences He chooses to write into my life. To not just keep them to myself, but to share them with others. Even when that is hard.
But never with the intention of drawing focus to myself or to hurt others in my life, but because these stories are incredible because they have an incredible author. One whose glory is reflected in every broken relationship redeemed, every heart healed and every act of grace extended.

How can we keep quiet about that? Why would we want to keep those things to ourselves? Don't be afraid to share what He calls you to or what He has walked you through. We are here for a purpose, to display His glory above all, that includes our experiences and stories.
You never know who might be listening and see Him and be touched by that, all because you shared part of your story.

//Story From a Sister: Nicole//

I wanted to allow for several other encouraging young women to share with you on Sundays, friends. Ladies who I feel will really encourage you in your walk, your pursuit of things you are passionate about and seeing how the Lord can use those who are willing. Seeing areas where those pieces are coming together...

I'm so incredibly excited to share with you this precious friend I met right here in this beautiful online community. She is a gem! Has such a gift with words, a way of convicting while encouraging at the same time & a gorgeous little baby.
Anyway....I'll let her share some of her story with you.
---------------------------------------

I love love love to write.
Stories, memories, journals, letters, and blogging.  Blogging blogging blogging.

When I really started blogging just after we got back from our honeymoon in the Bahamas, I was all amped up to grow a blog like sweet corn on a hot summer day.  Big, fast and tasty.  I had seen plenty of people do it.  How hard can good pictures and a few witty lines be?!

It quickly realized that I had set myself up for massive disappointment.  My regular old blog growth felt less-than-turtle speed as I watched bloggers I admire sky rocket into fame along with a plethora of popular products to review for free.  What was I doing wrong?!

Suddenly my identity had become how quickly I could reach a destination instead of celebrating the way God's story would look for me.  You can read about how I almost gave up here.

Then I got pregnant.  Life suddenly became one huge attempt at survival as I nannied two little kids during the peak of morning sickness, then went on to drive a school bus through the winter.  Quitting just five weeks before our little Emmett was born.  Blogging took a back seat to the back seat of my life.  Turns out those nine months was just the detoxing my soul needed.

God began to show me the incredible need for authentic, real community.  The beauty that happens when you approach the overwhelming world of social media with a heart to connect,  to encourage, to bless.  I slowly began to write and be just me.  I began to actively pursue the dreams and passions God has planted in my heart.  I began to reach out to girls and truly build relationships.  I began to see the expansion of my online community as a way to bless and build up those in my circle of influence, rather than just a way to make my own name great.

Best of all, my heart is so overjoyed.  So grateful.  Because in God's economy, we rise up only as we allow ourselves to stoop down with the beautiful heart of a servant.  As we give with generosity that is wild and free, our own needs are met in big and wonderful ways.  And most of all, as we realize even if I become the biggest and best blogger, I'm still only that.  A blogger.  The real value of life is living in a way that brings so much glory and attention to Jesus.  Because He is only and always the Greatest, never me.

Hope Spoken.

It's funny how the Lord works isn't it? When He closed the door & gave me a firm no about attending the Influence Conference, I wasn't sure if the door was going to be closed for Hope Spoken.
Well the doors just keep opening for this Midwest girl to head to Dallas in March to attend Hope Spoken
(Even though Influence was in the Midwest & the far more convenient choice)

So today I am linking up with all the precious ladies who will be heading down south for this encouraging conference.

Introduce yourself:
Hey friends! My name is Lisa Elle (although in this space I usually go by L). I am the voice behind the thoughts here at All Glorious Within. Sharing my walk with the Lord and hoping to encourage others in the process. You can find a lot of life, faith & dreams and passions here as I unpack pursuing them and trying to live life as a one-in-a-million for the Lord.

Something that you are little timid or nervous about for the weekend:
I found out last year that I am a total introvert when it comes to big gatherings of women. So I am nervous about feeling overwhelmed while there. Praying that this doesn't hinder by ability to meet precious friends and really learn about a lot of things I am passionate about while there.

Something that you are hoping to take away from Hope Spoken:
Encouragement and an overwhelming sense of love by God. To really hear from Him over the weekend about why He wants me there. To meet with some precious friends I have already connected with & to meet several new precious kindred spirits I may never have come across before.

Share something fun/random about yourself:
I am British by birth, Midwestern by culture and grew up in continental Europe & the Middle East. But I have a total american accent so you probably wouldn't guess this by meeting me!

Much Love!

//Being Intentional//

One thing I do have a passion for that I thought I would slide in here, is coffee dates. Intentional relationships and mentoring. I'm not always the greatest at being intentional and seeking out ladies whom I would want to mentor me or being intentional about meeting with other ladies for the purpose of encouragement and growth.

But it is something I am passionate about.

It's something I totally feel is biblical.

'As iron sharpens iron,
so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.'

Proverbs 27: 17

Even something as simple as meeting to pray for one another. Or intentionally meeting to share your walk with the Lord.

'Therefore encourage one another and build each other up,
just as in fact you are doing.'

1 Thessalonians 5:11

I don't think it is something that naturally happens even among church community, at least not in my experiences. It is something I am continually having to train myself to be purposeful in, to be bold in asking a friend about how they are doing spiritually, to give freedom to others to ask me the same question. To have that accountability.

I particularly love investing in the lives of younger girls, high school age. Being able to love on them as they walk through a challenging part of life. Being able to listen and on occasion share things I have learned with them. Something I am totally praying about being able to do more of in the very near future.

How are you intentional in your relationships friends?

//Sharing Our Stories//

I have shared about this topic before. Hints of these passions I am sharing this month are in fact shared through the pages and pages of posts found here.

There is great release in having shared our story, having done my part by writing it here
That might sound strange, but its the truth right now. By sharing it, I guess the fear is no longer there. I am trusting that the Lord is able to use the story of how He brought two sinners together, for His glory.

I pray that someone out there will be encouraged, either in seeing how the Lord is able to orchestrate stories across oceans. How when He has someone for you, He will bring the two of you together.
I feel the obedience was in the sharing.
How He chooses to use it, is completely up to Him. I don't know what that will look like.
In fact, I will choose not to let my worth be found in how many pageviews the story may get in the coming days, weeks or maybe years.
Not to let the opinions of others affect my obedience to share.

Because I will chose to trust Him who called me to share.

And you too friend, have a story to share. You may not be married, but that's ok.
God has written many amazing stories in our lives. Not just love stories!
Stories of Him providing above and beyond, times when He did the impossible, stories of amazing supernatural healing, stories that encourage, stories that move hearts.

Every one of us is going to live life in a different way, so our stories are all going to be unique. And the amazing grace is that we can all share our unique stories! To encourage, build up and help one another in our own journeys.
Even if your own stories is used to touch one other person, there is a domino effect in how many people that may reach through one person. We never know how the Lord will use our stories (Ruth made the decision to go with her mother-in-law to a foreign land even though she was widowed, and the Lord used her line to bring forth His Son!)!

So sharing stories is a passion of mine.  Encouraging others is a passion of mine.

Yet another piece of the puzzle that is my calling, my purpose, my bigger picture.

Summer Photo Drop. [Meet Up With Brooke From Magnolia Grace]

I can't believe I am still sharing pictures from over a month ago friends!
But I didn't want to not share these with you. I had the opportunity to meet up with Brooke from Magnolia Grace last month and we decided to go to the zoo together.
She is just such an encouragement to be around! I am so thankful to have met her at Influence last year.
Not to mention she definitely drove a lot more than I did to spend time together.
We will have to meet again a lot closer to her next time :)

We had a great time, especially when we found Africa. Who knew it was in Ohio you guys! LOL
We also paid to go on this little train ride which would supposedly take us closer to the African animals which were all hanging out in the middle of an enclosure. Well, this train was SO SLOW you could practically see the grass growing the rocks next to it were faster. All this while we were super far away from the animals, then once we got near them it sped up to get back to the station.
Say what????
We were highly amused and laughed so hard at the craziest which was this lame train ride.

Even the kid behind us is bored.

Looking for our next destination.
I'm sure the poor guy who we asked to take this shot didn't know what was going on when we suddenly posed.

Any place that serves lemonade with an amazing straw like this is pretty great in my book.

Recommended Reads. Booksneeze Part 3.

Yes, its another review. This girl has been reading a lot of books in the evenings as it is now officially summer. Woohoo.

At first glance this novel caught my eye, yes yet another judging a book by its cover moment for this girl. I am a romantic at heart and a sucker for fairytales, so even though I had originally planned on reviewing a different book, I couldn't help asking for this one instead. I love the mush, happy endings and ‘aww’ moments found in fairytales, must be the girly girl in me.
So this book (Once Upon A Prince by Rachel Hauck) looked perfect.

This is the story of a typical 20-something girl called Susanna, who finds life completely turned upside down when her boyfriend of 12 years breaks up with her instead of proposing. Enter a chance encounter with a tall dark handsome stranger who fast becomes a good friend to her. All the while she is unaware he is a prince in line to a European throne.

While being a cute story which didn't disappoint on its 'aww' moments, I couldn't help feeling like it was a retelling of one of my favorite movies, The Prince and Me
So while I enjoyed it, I can't say it is a new favorite.
I feel like I never really connected with any of the characters on a deep level or understood a lot of the political story going on between the two fictitious countries soon to be ruled by the Prince.
I would have loved to have seen more depth in the faith of the main characters  There were times when I felt scripture or a short prayer had been added almost as an afterthought.

All that to say, I would recommend it as a fun, clean, light romantic read. It is a cute fictitious story inspired by England's royal family.

What have you guys been reading lately?
I need some recommendations :)

Much Love,
L

When God Answers.

Hello dearest readers, I feel so grateful for L allowing me to blog post.
I cannot wait to get to know you ladies better!

When L first mentioned writing a guest post, I wasn't sure what I wanted to share. But as I sat down and prayed and reflected, sweet Abba brought me to a lovely memory of when he took me on a journey from brokenness to freedom.

I was two years out of college, and in that marvelous season had moved to Thailand where I taught English and then spent the following year traveling around the country with a non-profit that worked in Uganda. It was filled with adventure and fun. However when those two years ended and I moved home, my world seemed to come to a crashing halt.

 I was jobless.
Friendless {most of my friends had moved out of my hometown in northern California}
Boyfriendless.

 Truly, I felt alone.
Every job I applied for never even contacted me! Did I have the plague, I wondered?
 {Come on people...I have a college education!}
My self esteem was quickly draining empty.

 In the meantime,
I realized it was probably best to buckle down and take any ol' job to make a little money.
So what does this girl decide to do?
 Yep....work for her dad.

And what does this girls dad do?
 He's a rice farmer!

You guessed it, I became a farm girl.
Growing up in a city, I never actually had worked for my dad before, so there was a steep learning curve involved. Also involved were flannel shirts, work boots, 11 hour work days, and packing a lunch pail the size of texas. I drove a tractor which was quite the site to see because I was the only female out there and I was tiny. The rice fields were hot and dusty, and I came home exhausted every night, covered heard to toe in mosquito bites, rice dust and dirt. The only human interaction during the day was with a fellow tractor driver named Fidel who brought me one of his wife's home-made burritos.
Happily, I have no pictures to show of that time period, haha.

I'm not going to lie people, I felt was a little pathetic.
So amidst Taylor Swift on the radio, the tears flowed freely as I cried out to God asking him what the heck I was supposed to do with my life.
 Where do I go?
 What do I do next?
Am I even capable of anything, because after like 20 companies turn me down, I didn't feel like it.

It was raw out there on the farm people.
 raw.

One night I came home, showered, and curled up in bed.
I took out my tear-stained journal and a pen and began to pour.

I poured out my fears, my dreams, my insecurities, and hopes.

I asked specifically for 3 things:
1) An incredible, vibrant community that loved the poor.
2) A job at a small non-profit that worked in Africa {I was an African studies minor in college}
3) A husband that loved the Lord and had a heart for the world.

And then hope began to unravel, real and genuine before my eyes.

To begin, an organization that worked in Africa contacted me out of the blue. A little background....out of college, I had started a small non-profit called Africa Hope where I designed t-shirts and sold them online. When someone purchased a shirt, a portion of the proceeds went towards an organization listed on my site that was doing work in Africa. Well, this organization, Empowering Lives International (ELI), found my website and asked to be one of the featured organizations listed.

My pulse quicked as I scanned their website. They were an incredible holistic organization empowering lives in Africa. And they were also located in Southern California! So I emailed them back to let them know I would put them on my Africa Hope website. I also decided that I should go visit their office and meet them in person. A month later I planned a road trip to Southern California, and met with their staff. I casually mentioned that if they ever had a job opening, I would love to apply.

Well....a month later I got a call from ELI.
A position opened and they said I was the first person they thought of!!!!
I couldn't believe it...I almost died of joy!
People always used to joke that studying African history wouldn't help me much in the job hunt, but with God all things are possible:)

I started my job with ELI a month later.
It was a dream come true.
God had specifically answered 1 of my 3 desires.

Since I had just moved down to Southern California for my job, I needed a place to live. Knowing no one, the pastor of my home church suggested I live with one of his best friends and his family, The Cooks.

Well, it turns out that the Cooks had a son who was exactly my same age, Kevin. Kevin had just returned from living in Europe, and was currently also living at the Cooks house.
I moved into the Cooks house.
Kevin lived at the Cooks house.

And what do you know. We fall in love.
You can read the longer story here.

So now I have a man that loves Jesus.
God specifically answered 2 of my 3 desires.

 While I was living at the Cooks house {before dating Kevin}
I remember being a little uncomfortable in the suburbs.
It wasn't that I didn't know them. Heck, I grew up in a suburb.
It was just as though I felt God convicting and asking me "katie, how is it that you serve the poor when you travel, but you don't even know the poor at home?".
cough, cough, awkward silence.
 i.didn't.even.know.the.poor.

I had to think about that one for a minute.
God kept opening my eyes to the hundreds of scriptures where he talks about loving, serving, caring for the poor.
How can I love the poor if I don't know them?

So I cried out that God would show me where to go.
Well, in Orange County it's a bit hard to find the poor...but they are there amidst the glitz and glam of the beaches and disneyland.

At church one Sunday a man came and shared about the amazing ways God was moving in a low-income neighborhood.
I immediately stalked him after the service, and he told me to fill out a volunteer application online.
In my mind, I dreamed that maybe when I had been volunteering there for a while, I could possibly move into the neighborhood. Big dream.

When I went in for my volunteer interview, a girl came up to me that worked in the neighborhood. I didn't even know her, but the first thing out of her mouth was "Are you looking for housing? We have a spot in the girls house if you are interested".
WHAT? She caught me off gaurd. How did she know?

Two weeks later I moved into this neighborhood filled with color and immigrants, and food trucks, and spanish.
And I fell in love with a community.
 And they have changed me.

So now I have a vibrant community.
God has answered all 3 specific prayer requests.

This all happened over 4 years ago,
ut what I learned in that season was how tender and loving our God is to our most deepest desires.
 Pray Specifically.
 Ask Boldly,

 Dream Big!

And now we have a new journey coming our way!
Kevin and I were recently asked to move to Asia for 5 months this year to help partner with an aftercare home for girls rescued from sex-slavery.
We are excited, nervous, overwhelmed, and overjoyed.
But we know this, God is BIG and LOVING and powerful, and will continue to guide us on this journey!!

can't wait to meet you all, please stop by and say hello!
 Blessings on YOUR journey!

 love Katie
