All is not calm, All is Bright.

As I bend down to pick up yet another scrap of wrapping paper left on the floor from a flurry of wrapping presents which just took place, I notice the needles underneath the Christmas tree that need sweeping once again. Then I think how the tree probably needs more water, and while I'm thinking about that I remember the presents which I should have wrapped first because I'm going to be seeing that particular family tomorrow.
Then while thinking about the presents that need wrapping my mind wanders to the list of gifts I still have yet to get, and remember that Christmas is only five days away. I ponder how before I know it we will be in the car on the way to a party and I won't have had time to wrap our white elephant gifts.

Evenings become filled with wrapping presents and food prep for parties, along with everyday meal prep that needs to take place. All the regular household chores still need doing and now there's Christmas decorations to be put up still or dust around.

At the beginning of December, we had wonderful plans of taking time out every evening to read an Advent plan together enjoying this season. Instead we almost collapse into bed ever night after another meeting or party and I barely have time to silently pray before I drift to sleep.

Sound familiar to anyone else? When did Christmas get so busy?
When did it become more important to make sure that Christmas cards get to people on time and no one gets offended because you forgot to give them a gift?
Why is it so hard to find time to do the most important thing? Quiet our hearts in preparation for the gift which was given to us thousands of years ago in the form of a baby wrapped in rags.

That first Christmas wasn't extravagant, it took place in a stable of all places. And after having just given birth, I'm pretty sure Mary wasn't concerned with hanging up their stockings, making sure her tree looked perfect or that a garland was hanging straight. Her heart was focused entirely on the gift she have just been given and her God-given role of caring for God's son.

I love the Christmas season, don't get me wrong. It does seem like such a magical beautiful time of year. It's cozy, beautiful and has the potential to be healing to the soul as we embrace the gift God gave to us two thousand years ago. But often I just feel tired and worn out from the necessary 'responsibilities' by the time Christmas day rolls around. A far cry from the point of the season.

Perhaps its time to refocus and realise what is truly important about Christmas. To invest more time in relationships than the materialism of the season.
Perhaps also to remember that if we do forget something or accidently offended someone in forgetting to do something, we have been given a gift.
Grace.

We haven't failed if we can't do it all.
No matter how good or worthwhile something may seem.
We've only failed if we fail to see what is most important this season.

Christmas Preparations.

Well hey there friends!
I'm so sorry for the lack of posts this past week. Its that crazy awesome but insanely busy time of year again. This week I am participating in my first ever craft fair, selling items from my Etsy plus some new designs. So I've been busy making things and getting everything ready.
Not to mention all the other Christmas shopping and spending time with friends and family that has been happening.
I hope all of you enjoyed your Thanksgiving! =)
We totally did. The day started with a 3 mile run....yeah kinda crazy sometimes. Then a late brunch with friends and crafts, on to family dinner together and some Black Friday shopping to end the day. Sweet and crazy fun....but 22hr long day which was insane! =)

This past weekend we were able to spend some time starting Advent together as a couple and put our tree up. So I thought I would share some pictures from that fun afternoon.

I love looking at the ornaments we have collected together over the last 3 Christmases since we got married. Isn't that crazy how fast time passes?
Each one has such an awesome memory.
We have bought or made special ornaments each year.

Another huge blessing is this Advent Calendar (buy here) from Naptime Diaries!!
We have been using it while following along with the SheReadsTruth Advent plan.
So of course you guys now want one!
Its awesome, I love it!
Such a heart-preparation for Christmas.

How do you guys like to prepare for this upcoming season of Christmas?
How do you calm your hearts and focus on the true gift of Jesus?
I would love to hear your traditions and thoughts.
Leave me a comment.

Annual Ornament: Your Tree

Source: pinterest.com via Lisa on Pinterest

Andrew suggested this idea earlier this week.
I discovered today that I had saved this picture in my Pinterest.
Every year you take a section of the bottom when you go to throw the tree out and mark it for the year it was from.
I think he was mostly excited because he wants an excuse to use his wood burning tool =)
Love him!

Great idea for ornaments.
I've been trying to think up homemade Advent calendar ideas.
This might be a keeper for next year.

Christmas Tree Fun Part 2.

We decorated the tree once we had it up in the tree stand.
Using the lights from our wedding was an awesome idea =)
No need to buy Christmas lights.
We laughed hysterically at the ornament we bought on our honeymoon & forgot about.
A turtle making a snow angel in the sand....sand angel?
It was great discovering all the ornaments that hadn't been on a tree before.

We even got a star for the top of the tree.
I have always wanted a star for the top of a Christmas tree.
We always had an angel growing up. Now we have a gold star which looks super pretty all lit up.
The finished living room. Looks so festive with the lights, tree, stockings, gingerbread cushions & seasonal candle burning =)
This is the ornament from last year.
A hallmark special. Literally.

I found these awesome reindeer in TJMaxx this year.

That is the finished effect of our tree.
I love coming home after a long day and putting my feet up gazing at the tree lights.
Makes the cold weather so much more enjoyable.
Let it snow. Let it snow. Let is snow.

Christmas Tree Fun Part 1.

Since we didn't have Christmas in our own home last year, we never got to buy a tree.
So this year we went shopping for our first Christmas tree.
Super exciting.
We got the space in the living room all set up before we headed out.

We looked around the lot for the perfect tree.
I never knew that there were different types, call me naive =)
Then, we found it. Our very own Douglas Fir tree.
Here it is in our living room.
And we set about setting up our tree & decorating the home.
Anyway I will have Part 2 showing the finished tree up soon.
I gotta head to work.
Much Love,
L
P.S. I spent the morning working on this year's quilt so hopefully photos of that soon also.

Dreaming.

We had a change of plans, we are getting our tree today instead ekkkk!
I am dreaming of our tree. Obviously it won't look quite like this.
But it will be stunning all the same.I will post pictures when we have it.
I love seeing people's trees up. They are all so different & totally unique to each family.
What unique items are on your tree?

Ornament Tradition.

{Via}

Just in case you couldn't tell, I am a HUGE fan of the Disney Family Fun website. Totally sharing my secrets of the trade here.
That can be blamed on a free subscription to their magazine which I got for a year after collecting pop tarts tokens.
Personally, I work better with the website. You can sign up for emails & they will send you great craft projects. If you're going to be with kids during the winter, they have awesome crafts to keep you all busy.

My plan is to have a new special tree ornament every year. Last year we bought a 'First Christmas' ornament from Hallmark.

{Via}

I am thinking of making a time capsule ornament for each year from now on. Writing the year on it and either adding little things from the year or just 2 photos. I bought the clear ornaments from Michaels for 60c each...awesome!
I can't wait to make the ornament before our tree goes up on saturday.
Do you guys make ornaments or have special ones every year?
Much Love,
L
